"The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything"

What Douglas Adams Accidentally Got Right

In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a supercomputer called Deep Thought is asked for "the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything."

After 7.5 million years of computation, it answers: "42."

The joke is that no one knows what the Question actually is. A new computer (Earth) is built to find the Question, but Earth is destroyed five minutes before completing its 10-million-year program.

Douglas Adams claimed he chose 42 because it was "an ordinary, smallish number." He sat in his garden, thought for a moment, and decided "42 will do."

Here's the strange thing: the number Adams "randomly" chose appears throughout Scripture at moments of profound significance. And in the book of Revelation, 42 marks something very specific.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But the pattern is worth examining.

42 in Scripture

42 Generations to Christ

Matthew 1:17

The genealogy of Jesus is divided into three sets of 14 generations. From Abraham to David, from David to Babylon, from Babylon to Christ. Total: 42 generations to the Messiah.

42 Months of the Beast

Revelation 13:5

"Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months." This is the duration of the beast's authority over God's people.

42 Encampments

Numbers 33

Israel's journey from Egypt to the Promised Land involved 42 stops. The path from bondage to rest was marked by exactly 42 encampments.

42 Months: Gentiles Tread

Revelation 11:2

"The holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months." The same timeframe appears again.

The Mathematics of 42

42 = 6 ร— 7
6
Number of Man

Created 6th day
Works 6 days
Falls short of 7

ร—
7
Number of God

Sabbath rest
Completion
Perfection

42 encodes the intersection of human and divine authority.

In binary, 42 is 101010 โ€” an alternating pattern that has fascinated programmers and mathematicians alike.

The Prophetic 42

The most significant appearance of 42 in Scripture is the 42 months of the beast's reign. This timeframe appears seven times in Daniel and Revelation:

The Same Period, Different Expressions:

42 months = 1,260 days = 3ยฝ years
= "time, times, and half a time"

This timeframe marks the duration of a power that would "think to change times and laws" (Daniel 7:25). In Protestant historicist interpretation, this prophesies a period of religious authority that would alter God's commandments.

"And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time." โ€” Daniel 7:25

The Journey Pattern

Israel's 42 encampments trace a specific journey:

Egypt

Starting Point

Bondage. Slavery. Works without rest.

42 Stops

The Wilderness Journey

Testing. Learning. Dependence on God.

Canaan

Destination

The Promised Land. Rest. The Sabbath inheritance.

42 marks the journey from bondage to rest. The Sabbath is the sign of that rest (Exodus 31:13-17).

The 42 months of the beast inverts this pattern โ€” a journey away from God's rest, toward human tradition.

The Question Adams Missed

In Hitchhiker's Guide, the cosmic joke is that humanity has the Answer (42) but doesn't know the Question.

Scripture presents a similar pattern:

The Question

"Who has authority over worship โ€” the Creator who sanctified the seventh day, or the power that claimed to change it?"

The 42 months marks when the change was made.
The Answer was always there. The Question is what matters.

Coincidence or Providence?

Douglas Adams was Cambridge-educated, raised Anglican, and deeply read. He became an atheist but was familiar with religious concepts.

Whether he knew the biblical significance of 42 or not, the number he "randomly" chose happens to be:

His satirical point โ€” that humanity seeks answers without knowing the question โ€” is precisely what the prophetic use of 42 addresses.

The world has the Answer embedded in prophecy.

The Question is what The Remnant Thread reveals.

If 42 marks the beast's authority, what was changed? What "times and laws" were altered during those prophetic months?
