Did Jesus Abolish the Sabbath?

A lord does not destroy what belongs to him. He governs it. Jesus corrected man-made restrictions while honoring the Sabbath as God intended.

The Sabbath Was His Custom

Luke records Jesus's regular practice:

"And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read."

Luke 4:16

The word "custom" (Greek: ethos) indicates habitual, regular practice. Jesus attended synagogue on the Sabbath not once or occasionally, but as His established pattern.

If Jesus intended to abolish the Sabbath, why did He keep it faithfully throughout His thirty-three years of life?

What Jesus Said About the Sabbath

Jesus made several significant statements about the Sabbath. None of them suggest abolition:

"The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath."

Mark 2:27

The Sabbath was "made for man" (Greek: anthropos), meaning humanity, not just Jews. Jesus affirmed the Sabbath as a gift for all people, established at Creation before any nation existed.

"For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day."

Matthew 12:8

Jesus claimed authority over the Sabbath as its Lord. A lord does not destroy what belongs to him. He governs it.

"It is lawful to do well on the sabbath days."

Matthew 12:12

Jesus taught what was "lawful" on the Sabbath. This assumes the Sabbath remains in force. He corrected how to keep it, not whether to keep it.

Healing on the Sabbath

The Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath when He healed on that day. But Jesus never violated God's law. He violated their man-made traditions.

Key distinction: The Pharisees had added 39 categories of forbidden work and countless sub-regulations. Jesus rejected these human additions while honoring the Sabbath as God intended.

When challenged, Jesus appealed to Scripture and reason:

Jesus concluded: "Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days" (Matthew 12:12). He did not say "the Sabbath no longer applies." He said doing good is lawful on the Sabbath.
